BFA Artificial Intelligence Transparency Policy

Beginning in July 2026, the League is instituting the following policy regarding the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Large Language Models (LLMs) by Bicycle Friendly America (BFA) applicants.

The League of American Bicyclists recognizes that many BFA applicants are using AI and LLM tools to assist in answering open-ended questions on the BFA applications. However, to maintain the integrity of the BFA program and the applications submitted, we have designed the following policy to ensure that applicants are taking care to review and correct any errors or embellishments that may result from AI-assisted writing.

  • All applicants will be asked to acknowledge whether or not any AI or LLM tools were used to complete any part of the BFA application they are submitting.

  • If AI was used, applicants will be asked to provide a list of all AI and/or LLM tools used, for increased transparency.

  • Applicants are expected to review, verify, and, if necessary, correct any information or responses that were developed using AI or LLM tools. Applicants using AI or LLM tools will be asked to confirm that all the information provided on their application has been read and verified (and, if necessary, corrected) by a human.

  • If, during our review process, the League or our reviewers suspect that an application answer is of questionable validity or accuracy:

    • The League reserves the right to ask the applicant to review and resubmit application responses that appear to be AI-written and of questionable validity or accuracy.

    • Applicants will have up to one week to resubmit any application responses called into question. If more time is needed for revisions, applicants may instead choose to duplicate their entire application into a new draft to reapply in the next review cycle instead.

    • If, after revisions have been made, the League or our reviewers still have concerns about the validity or accuracy of an application, the League reserves the right to disqualify that application from review. The applicant may reapply with a new application in the following review cycle.

This policy and its related questions will be added to the BFA Applications on the following schedule:

  • BFC: Added to the 2027 BFC Application in July 2026
  • BFB: Adding to the Fall 2026 BFB Application in July 2026
  • BFU: Adding to the 2027 BFU Application in October 2026
